CRITICAL MENTAL HEALTH FORUM

16 January 2002

Apologies: Carla Willig; Sarah Rasch.

Business:

  1. Wendy Lee had sent Dave a copy of an article by Pete Fleischmann from Open Mind on psychosurgery. This was circulated at the meeting.
  2. There was some discussion about the 'Mind out for mental health' campaign following a request for information from Linda.
  3. Patricia Cusson circulated a leaflet advertising a workshop ('preventing readmission in mental health'). This was based on a relapse prevention model. For information contact Rami Jumnoodoo (tel: 020 8451 4264) email: ramij@onetel.net.uk
  4. There was some discussion about future topics for discussion after which there was a show of hands for each item: user-led research (15 votes); drugs and drug companies (12 votes); psychosurgery (7 votes); the creative use of drama (4 votes). As a result Diana Rose agreed to introduce a discussion on user-led research.
  5. There was a really excellent talk by Liz Sayce (Disability Rights Commission) which led into a very interesting discussion. A copy of Liz's powerpoint slides is attached.
  6. A contributor to the newmentalhealth discussion group (which can be accessed via www.criticalmentalhealth.co.uk) has asked for people to make contact if they are interested in using drama vignettes to explore issues relating to surviving the mental health system.

Next meeting: Wednesday 20 February 6.30-8.30 Lower Club Lounge Central YMCA (Great Russell Street, London WC1). Diana Rose to initiate a discussion on user-led research.

Future meetings are at the same time, same place and are on the third Wednesday of the month: Wednesday 20 March; Wednesday 17 April; Wednesday 15 May; Wednesday 19 June.
