Critical Mental Health Forum

Tuesday 7th September 2004

The group discussed the mental health bill including what stage it was at and the DoH’s comments. There is a mental health bill briefing on the 8th of October, organised by the Chair of the Mental Health Alliance and an All Party Parliamentary group meeting on the 12th of October. The group agreed that when the content of the bill was made available they would decide what action to take, alongside other groups.

Jacqueline Davies, who had previously presented plans for her research with service users, said that they were at the stage of recruitment and asked for participants, gave out information sheets and asked for this to be passed on to those who may be interested. Participants need to have been service users in forensic settings. They will be employed as lead researchers and employees of City University, at a level that will not effect their benefit entitlement.

Group members shared information about: Publication by Mind, Wardwatch; OK2B, breaking down stigma about mental health; Paranoia Network conference in July; Possible change to title of Asylum

Presentation by SPN (Stephen Hawkins & Judy Foster)

Stephen began, explaining his involvement in SPN by discussing his career path in mental health and how this had led him to believing that SPN was the way forward. Judy discussed the role of SPN, the work it has done, particularly study days they have held, hopes for the future including research from a social perspective and the need for continued funding.

The presentation provoked discussion about the value of work for users of mental health services. Many believed this was valuable but there were differing views.

The next meeting is on the 16th of November, when there will be a presentation on therapeutic communities. Speakers from the paranoia network for the January meeting were suggested and funding their train fares was discussed.
